The poet, the artist,
the sleuth-whoever sharpens our perception tends to be antisocial; rarely “well-adjusted,”
he cannot go along with currents and trends. A strange bond often exists among
anti-social types in their power to see environments as they really are. This
need to interface, to confront environments with a certain antisocial power, is
manifest in the famous story, “The Emperor’s New Clothes.” “Well-adjusted” courtiers,
having vested interests, saw the emperor as beautifully appointed. The “antisocial”
brat, unaccustomed to the old environment, clearly saw that the Emperor “ain’t
got nothin’ on.” The new environment was clearly visible to him.
According to the quote, anti-social
individuals are able to see faults within a society. Personally, the term ‘anti-social’
is an excuse to degrade observant individuals.
Those who are observant and intellectual
are capable of seeing faults. In my opinion, anti-social is a term used to
explain why an individual or a group of individuals does not fit into a certain
group’s behaviors, beliefs, or character traits. This term allows for
individuals within the group to feel better about their imperfections.
Observant and intellectual
individuals, eventually voice their opinion in a time frame that makes them comfortable,
no matter if it is in 20 minutes or 50 years.
When individuals are dependent on
a culture being a certain way they tend to consciously or unconsciously blind themselves
to progress.
Individuals who are positively
affected by progress will be able to see the faults.
How long it takes these
individuals to speak depends on how deeply they are suppressed.
Today, the emperor and his
courtiers are individuals who are used in a world without technology. Some are
not ready for the type of progression technology provides. Those that see
technology as a positive progression will notice and voice the faults of a past
generation.
